How To Do Your Taxes
So you have yet to file your taxes. You can not have an excuse—anyone can easily file taxes in an hour with free and easy online programs. However, some of thesefree tax filing programs may be causing you to not get your full refund. Generally these programs use short tax forms, when some of your deductions may necessitate the longer forms like how a CPA or certified public accountant does. To make sure you don't pay too much or your don't miss out on money you are owed, check the following five areas before you file your taxes:
1) Interest on Student Loans. Do you have interest on student loans? If your loans are still owned by a government lender, you'll be able to deduct the amount of interest you paid. You should have gotten documentation through postal mail from your government lender, but it’s not a bad idea to call and check on the amount. You can deduct upto $2,500. For tax debt relief you should call Titan tax relief.
2) Mileage to Charity and Charity Events: Did you attend several charities and charaty events? Even one can make you eligible for a deduction, not only for what you donated but mileage as well. You can deduct 14 cents per mile. For example if you've gone to another state to attend a charity event you can use your plain ticket or gas bill to show your travelling expanses.
3) Anything Job Search Related: Did you search for a new job this year? You can deduct any money paid related to a search for a new position. It could be traveling expanses, paper costs, anything you spent at FedEx or Costco. There are even more like resume paper, a new suit and travel to and from interviews can be deducted, so long as you are not reimbursed from the hiring company.
4) Traveling: If you conducted any business on a trip (and you can prove it, in the case of an audit) you can deduct the costs of the trip for business reasons. This can include business dinners, lunches and other expanses.
5) Telephone: This is a one-time refund (not deduction), but if you own a phone you can get upto $30 back from a federal excise tax. If you have a family plan or if you are a family of four or more you can get $60 back. For deductions, check how much you are calling your place of business, or how much time you spend talking about business matters. This has to be your personal cell phone, not the cell phone for which the company is already paying for.
It may not be too late to hire someone to file your taxes for you. Don't hire just anyone! Hire someone who has the license and the experience to do your taxes. You might end up getting alot more back than you thought, making the expense worth the while. If you didn't know, you can deduct the payments made to an accountant on next year's taxes.
