You might not have filed your return from last two three years and no letter has been sent by the IRS. It doesn’t mean that IRS does not have any idea about you. The day IRS’ systems highlight your name you will find letter in your mailbox with an information about the money you owe to the IRS. Don’t get surprise with the amount of penalties, interest and other charges. If you are facing these kinds of tax issues, one of the best ways to deal with them is to know your rights as a tax payer. It would also allow you to get some tax relief as well.

Letter from the IRS is intimation from the tax authority about the money you owe and the time period in which you need to contact the IRS and to the money. Most of the tax payers get panic after finding letter from the IRS in their mailbox. However, it is just a letter from the IRS and you are not going to be detained by them. If you don’t want to face severe consequences, you should start act immediately. The time limitation would be mentioned in the IRS’ letter. In case, you fail to respond to the IRS in given timeline, be ready to lose your valuable assets and pay check will be garnished as well.

As a taxpayer, you have several rights in order to deal with the IRS. The agent or representative of the IRS is abide by these rights. They need to explain everything to you and protect your rights as a taxpayer. In case, you are clueless about how to deal with the IRS, abstain from talking to them rather look out for tax professional who can deal with the IRS on your behalf. However, you need to find the tax attorney at the earliest. In case, IRS agent doesn’t give your time to find tax attorney, inform him/her about your tax right according to which you have a right to hire authorized person such as tax attorney or CPA to represent your case. In case, you don’t know how to deal with a particular situation and need professional assistance in the middle of an audit, the discussion or audit would be rescheduled. You also have authority to record the conversation of the meetings with the IRS.

IRS agent cannot treat you unprofessionally and in disrespectful manner. In case, you are finding that agent is not treating you fairly you can talk to his/her manager and ask for another agent. Also, there is no need to provide original documents to the agent copies would be sufficient.
