Did you receive letter from IRS for an audit? Is IRS investigating about back taxes? Only few people get under IRS surveillance for investigation. You will come under this category only if your taxes exceed $10,000. Usually IRS does not criminally investigate the people. However, if the agents find strong evidence(s) against you, you would be welcoming IRS’ skilled police force. In case, your back taxes exceed $10,000 and skilled police force pay a visit at your home, what will you do? No need to be scared as you can get out of their trap provided you know how they work what steps they take.
First thing, you should not exaggerate things while talking to your friends, family and acquaintances. This might go against you because agents from special police force will call your friends, family members and whoever belongs to your network to get as much information as they can. Your spouse also needs to answer the call. Sometimes, your colleagues, business associates, banks also get calls from IRS special police force. Your email accounts will also get scanned by the agents. It doesn’t mean that they will open every mail your send or receive, they just follow the leads from the addresses sending you mails.
To monitor your expenses and incomes, they will get in touch with your bank and credit card companies and retrieve all the bills. The copies of your phone bills also get into the records of IRS special police force. Now, you must be thinking that your accountants and bankers will never give any information to the IRS. It’s true that banks and accountants withhold your personal information however; a call from IRS police force can be intimidating for bank employees and your accountants and your financial details will be with them. They can easily check about the tax relief you avail and tax credits you filed for. All in all they have all the authorities to peep into your personal life. The most dangerous thing that you can face if you’re under investigation is that IRS police force can tap your phone lines and they just need a court order for that and it is not a big deal for special agents.
IRS can also issue summonses to record keepers such as brokers, enrolled agents and attorneys. Once you receive the summons, you’d need to report to the IRS within three days otherwise criminal investigation will start against you. Now, you must be wondering, if there are any kinds of provisions that will help you to protect your records from IRS. Isn’t it? As a taxpayer you’ve a right to proceed against the summons issued against you but within 20 days of receiving it. Then you should file a petition to nullify the summons with the district court. As a taxpayer, if your dispute with the IRS cannot get resolved within six months, the limit of six months will be extended for next six months.
